DEMOREST, Georgia -- Three Piedmont College baseball players were honored by D3Baseball.com as the trio earned a spot on the 2012 All-South Region team. Pitchers
ED COOK and
KEVIN CALDWELL were each second team selections while outfielder
KYLE DAVIS garnered third-team distinction.
Cook, the Fayetteville native, was a transfer from Wingate University before arriving in Demorest. In the last three seasons, Cook has been one of the top relievers in school history in the NCAA-era. The closer carried a 2.19 ERA on the season in 23 appearances, notching a 2-0 record with 10 saves. Cook added 46 strikeouts to just eight walks in 37 innings of work, while opposing hitters hit just .239 off him with just five extra-base hits.
Caldwell, a Loganville native, was the staff ace on a team and pitched to an 8-3 record in 2012 with a 3.05 ERA. He now has 17 career wins on the hill, with two to go for the all-time mark of 19. Caldwell was phenomenal for most of the season, including two incredible starts against the #1 team in the nation and reigning NCAA Division-III National Champions, Marietta College. Caldwell became the first pitcher to knock off Marietta in a 4-1 win March 9 at home.
Davis, a Warner Robbins native, came into 2012 as the school's all-time triples leader already. He added seven more this year to go with four homeruns and 10 doubles, slugging .557 in the process. He leads the team with a .341 batting average and 35 RBI, while also leading with 17 stolen bases and 36 runs scored. Among his better performances was a multi-homer game in a 9-2 win at Sewanee, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 5-for-6 with four RBI and two runs with his two homeruns and double. He also made the most of senior day at Loudermilk Field in a 10-5 win over Huntingdon. The left fielder went 4-for-5 at the plate, this time just a double shy of the cycle after hitting a homer and triple, with a pair of runs and pair of RBI.
