Gainesville, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team could not have asked for a more balanced score sheet in their season opener against visiting Tennessee Temple University this evening. Five different Lions found the back of the net as PC rolled past TTU 7-1 to notch the first win of the season for the young Piedmont squad.
In the first half, freshman
Justin Whitaker made quick work of the Crusader defense grabbing two goals within a minute of play. Whitaker's first goal came off a free kick service from junior
Nick Weatherby in the seventh minute. Seconds later, the freshman struck again this time with a first-time finish off a cross from
Sidney Smith.
Piedmont grabbed another score in the 9th minute as senior
Jon Reinert laced a freek kick around the wall while Weatherby put away a mishandled ball from the keeper in the 24th minute. Tennessee Temple would then get on the board converting on a penalty kick awarded in the 39th minute.
The second half was more of the same for PC as sophomore
Brooks Willis finished another assist from Smith in the 56th minute while newcomer
Stephen Sherfy slid to knock in a Weatherby service in the 81st minute. Willis rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute with his second goal of the evening off a deflection in front of goal.
As a team, the Lions finihed with 16 shots to just 5 for the visitors and also topped the Crusaders in corners with 11 to just 2 for TTU. In goal, junior netminder
Brian Gaid turned in a solid performance saving four shots allowing a single score on a penalty in the first half.
Now 1-0 overall, Piedmont will make a quick turn-around as they travel to Toccoa Falls College on Saturday, September 4 for a 7:00 kickoff.
