Camp LeJeune, NC -- The Piedmont College men's golf team set a new school record for 54-hole score en route to a 29th place finish at the 39th Annual MCCS Intercollegiate hosted by the US Marine Corps.
Clifton Barton and
David Strader both shot a new individual school record of 291 (+7) to lead the team.
The event is one of the nation's most coveted small college golf tournaments and features 30 teams from all over the nation and is contested on the Gold and Scarlet courses at Camp LeJeune. At the 36-hole mark and after all teams have played each course, the field is divided in half with the top 15 competing on the final day on the Gold course and the bottom 15 playing a separate event on the Scarlet course. Piedmont finished in 14th place out of 15 teams on the Scarlet course.
The team score of 318-291-295--904 (+56) bettered the previous school record set at the same event in 2007 by two strokes.
Individually, Barton carded a 75-71-73--219 while Strader posted a steady 72-73-74--219.
Top-ranked Methodist University won the event.
Piedmont will wrap up the 2009-10 season on April 12-13 when the team travels to Atlanta, GA to take part in the Emory University Spring Invitational at Stone Mountain Golf Club.
