Demorest, GA -- After trailing 29-28 at half time the Piedmont College women's basketball team exploded with 40 second half points to overtake visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Spelman College this evening at Cave Arena by the score of 68-53. The win extends the current winning streak to six games and moves the women to 9-2 in conference play.
The forward tandem of
Sada Wheeler and
Mandy Beasley were instrumental in the paint notching double-doubles respectively. Wheeler posted 19 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, while Beasley added 11 points and 10 rebounds, five on the offensive end.
Lisa Jennings also reached double figures with 16 points and a contest-best six assists while
Alyssa Jones chipped in with nine points and a pair of steals.
The first half featured 11 lead changes and five ties and saw neither team lead by more than three points. In the second frame the Lady Lions came out firing with a 20-4 run, eight of which were scored in the paint by Wheeler.
Piedmont would lead by a game-high 19 points with six and a half minutes remaining and cruised to the 68-53 victory.
The Lady Lions, now an even 11-11 overall, will return to the court again on Saturday, February 13th as they play host to GSAC member LaGrange College at Cave Arena starting at 2:00.
