Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's basketball team improved its winning streak to four games this evening at Cave Arena by defeating visiting Johnson Bible College by the score of 100-55. The Lions dominated the glass pulling down nearly twice as many rebounds (56-27), 15 of which came on the offensive end.
On an equally important note, the game marked Military Appreciation Night and featured a live rendition of the National Anthem in front of a color guard prior to the tip-off. At an awe-inspiring halftime presentation a pair of current Piedmont students were recognized for their service in the armed forces as well as a standing ovation for all veterans and active military members in the crowd.
The Lions, who never trailed, opened the game on a 13-3 run highlighted by six points from senior
Michael Rubio. The squad then exploded at the 12-minute mark with a 21-4 run to extend the margin to a comfortable 28 points. Piedmont would lead by as many as 36 and enter the locker room with a sizable 64-29 advantage.
Rubio led five players in double-figures with a team-best 16 points all of which came in the first half.
J.C. Herebia added 15 points in just 10 minutes of action while
Tyler Arnold and
Dee Smith both cam off the bench to contribute with 14 and 11 points respectively. Freshman post player
Jim Orr tallied his first career double-double of the season as he posted 12 points and 11 points as he tied with teammate
Josh Chapman for the game high in rebounding.
For the game PC dominated the paint holding a decisive 68-14 advantage while adding 26 points off of turnovers. The entire roster recorded baskets for the Lions, who now move to 12-6 overall.
The men will return to the court again on Saturday, January 30th as they host Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College at Cave Arena in a showdown of conference unbeatens starting at 4:00.
