Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College fall sports teams are currently preparing for the upcoming Great South Athletic Conference Championships this weekend hosted by Maryville College in Maryville, TN. The men's and women's soccer teams, as well as the volleyball squad all enter their respective tournaments as the second seed.
The men's and women's cross country teams will also participate in their championship meets on Saturday, November 7 hosted by LaGrange at Pyne Road Park in LaGrange, GA. The last men's cross country team championship came in 2002 while the women last hoisted the conference title in 2003.
The men's soccer team finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-8-1 and 4-1-1 in the Great South. The Lions only conference blemish came at the hands of top-seeded Maryville by the score of 2-1. PC will take on third-seeded LaGrange in the semifinals while the Scots will take on fourth-seeded Huntingdon. The Lions last won the GSAC tournament title in 2006.
The Lady Lions soccer team, currently 13-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play, will square-off with third-seeded Agnes Scott who knocked off sixth-seeded LaGrange 3-1. The Scotties and PC played a thrilling double-overtime match on October 28th with the Lady Lions taking the 2-1 decision. The winner will face the victor of top-seeded Maryville College, currently undefeated in conference action, and fourth-seeded Salem who advanced with a 2-0 victory over #5 Spelman. The last women's GSAC tournament title for Piedmont was in 2001. The 2009 women's soccer tournament champion will recieve an automatic berth into the 2009 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
The Lady Lions volleyball team enters as the second seed and will take on the winner of #3 Huntingdon and #6 LaGrange. PC currently sports a 23-8 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark with the only loss coming at the hands of tournament host Maryville. In the other semifinal match top-seeded Maryville awaits the winner of #4 Salem and #5 Spelman. The volleyball team's last GSAC tournament title was in 2007. The 2009 volleyball tournament champion will recieve an automatic berth into the 2009 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
