Beginning her third year on Stephen Andrew’s coaching staff this 2012 season is assistant women’s soccer coach and former Georgia State standout Charlotte Vargo. The once collegiate goalkeeper and now Lady Lions coach returns for her third stint on campus.
Vargo brings a wealth of experience to the Piedmont women’s soccer program having spent several seasons playing for the Panthers at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. In just her first year in the royal blue and white, Vargo made an early impact on campus as part of a goalkeeping duo that held opponents to one goal or less in 15 games and matched the school record for fewest goals allowed during a season with 14.
After sitting out her sophomore season with an injury, Vargo then started 19 games in her second full season posting a .775 save percentage before rounding out her playing career in 2007. The standout goalkeeper was awarded the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Award in 2007 and 2008 while earning Dean’s List honors during her final two seasons at GSU.
Though her appointment at Piedmont is the first collegiate coaching experience for the GSU graduate, Vargo does bring previous coaching experience to PC having worked with the Atlanta Youth Soccer Association since the fall of 2005. During her time with AYSA, Vargo worked mainly with Academy-aged girls’ teams from U-9 to U-13 while also staffing many camps and conditioning clinics for girls ages 5-18 throughout the soccer club. Most recently, Vargo’s teams took home tournament titles in the RYSA Spring Kickoff Classic in the spring of 2010 and also claimed a championship from the NASA Adidas Friendship Cup in the fall of 2009.
Vargo continues her work with youth soccer having served on the staff of AYSA summer camps while also working with the camp staffs at Grass Rootes and Maryville College. An active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Vargo attained her coaching credentials by earning her ‘D’ License from the United States Soccer Federation after completing a national coaching course in the winter of 2009.
Vargo attained her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Georgia State University graduating Magna Cum Laude in the spring of 2008. The second-year assistant coach is currently pursuing her Master of Business Administration from Piedmont College while assisting in all aspects of the PC women’s soccer programs.
