Demorest, GA -- With the official start to the 2011-12 season just around the corner, the Piedmont College men's and women's basketball teams invite the PC campus community to its Inaugural Hoopla Frenzy event on Thursday, November 10 at 7:00 PM in Cave Arena. In addition to meeting both teams and the cheerleaders, the night will serve as the official introduction of a Cave Crazies 6th Man student section.
Featuring introductions of both basketball teams, a cheerleader dance routine and a handful of interactive crowd participation games, the night will be the first of its kind in the history of the basketball programs at PC. Contest winners will be rewarded with free pizzas and there will also be a three-point shootout including the men's and women's teams as well as a dunk contest.
“Cave Arena has always been a tough environment for visiting teams because of the crowd support for our basketball teams and this fan interactive event will serve as a great kick-off to the 2011-12 basketball season," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Lee Glenn.
Coach Glenn's Lions return to the Cave after a 10-16 season in 2010-11 and an appearance in the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference championship tournament. Returning to lead PC is senior guard
Josh Haymore who spent his junior season becoming one of the deadliest three-point shooting threats in all of NCAA Division III with his 47.6% shooting from behind the arc ranking him seventh in the country in that statistical category.
For the Piedmont faithful, this will be the first time seeing their Lady Lion basketball team in action since the team took the GSAC by storm in 2010-11 winning the championship tournament for the third time in five seasons under Head Coach
Jamie Purdy. Days later in the National Tournament, Purdy's team took then #1 ranked St. Thomas More College to a five point game with a minute remaining in their own building while making the program's third-ever NCAA post-season appearance.
"This should be a really great chance for the fans to come on in and see our teams prior to the start of the season," said Head Women's Basketball Coach
Jamie Purdy. "These are exciting times to be around Piedmont College athletics and we're happy to be a part of a new tradition here at PC."
In addition to all of the festivities surrounding the night, the first 100 participants to the event will receive an official CAVE CRAZIES t-shirt. Also making an appearance will be the Lady Lion soccer team who won their first GSAC championship since 2001 this past weekend and are currently readying for their NCAA first round contest at #5 Emory University this Saturday. Joining the women's soccer team for recognition will be the Piedmont cross country runners who will be traveling west for their own NCAA appearance after the Lady Lion runners won the GSAC championship meet on October 29th.
The Cave Crazies are encouraged to come out in full force as the women's team will officially kick off the season on Sunday, November 20 with a home game against Methodist University at 2:00. The men will tip off two nights later on Tuesday, November 22 at home versus local rival Toccoa Falls College at 7:00.
