Rome, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team opened the 2010 season this afternoon splitting a double-header with in-state host Berry College. Piedmont defeated the Vikings 7-4 in the first game but could not complete the sweep losing 5-1 in the finale.
In the first game, Piedmont took an early lead in the second inning with
Jamie Dennis scoring the go-ahead run to put the Lady Lions up 2-1. Berry would reclaim the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth for the 4-3 margin.
Piedmont was quick to rally in the top of the fifth inning. After an RBI-single from
Rebecca Renfroe tied the score, Dennis would again contribute with an RBI-single scoring two more runs for the Lady Lions. Piedmont never trailed again en route to its first victory of the young season.
In the second game, the Lady Lions struggled offensively while Berry posted five runs in the first three innings. Piedmont's lone RBI came in the top of the seventh when

Jennifer Wormley. The Lady Lions could get no closer and dropped the four-run decision.
Raley White paced the offense going 4-7 with a pair of runs scored. In the victory Cofer went the distance allowing four runs, one earned, while striking out seven.
The split moves Piedmont to 1-1 overall. The Lady Lions will return to the field when they travel to the Ferrum College Invitational in Salem, VA beginning Saturday, March 13th with game time to be announced.
