12 Questions & Answers With #12 Wes Parker (Men's Basketball)

Wes Parker is a four-year member of the Piedmont College men's basketball team and is a captain on this year's team. The guard from Vidalia, GA graduated in December 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and is currently pursuing an MAT in Secondary Education. Parker sat down with Sports Information Director Richard Dombrowsky for a question and answer session.

1. You grew up in the small town of Vidalia, GA. What was it like?
Vidalia is a really small town where everyone knows everyone. I am not a big-city guy and having so many family and friends who supported me was incredible. Since I came to Piedmont I have had so many supporters make the four-hour drive to watch the Lions play basketball.

2. In addition to playing basketball you also played football (captained team to GISA State Championship) and baseball, how did that come about?
The high school I went to was a small private school, so in order to field enough players for each sport many of my friends and I played sports we normally wouldn't. They took care of me in football and baseball so I could play basketball with a full squad.

3. What brought you to Piedmont College to play basketball?
Coach Glenn and his staff spent a lot of time with myself and my family working on a solid four-year plan. I was really excited to attend a school where I knew I would be more than just a person lost in huge classrooms and be part of a tight-knit basketball team.

4. What is it like being a player on the PC basektball team?
The best part is the team camaraderie, the friends I have made will be brothers for life. On the court we play an extremely up-tempo game with an offense that is designed to create shots for teammates. The other thing we try to do is outwork our opponents, we really live by the saying that hard works beats talent when talent doesnt work hard.

5. You graduated in December with your undergraduate degree and have already started your advanced degree. Have the guys given you a hard time about that?
Yes, I have acquired nicknames like "Vet" and have definately taken some ribbing about it. On the flip side it is nice to know that I have completed my degree and gotten a head start on my MAT.

6. After this season is over what is going to be the one thing you miss the most?
Without question my teammates. Not only do we have a great time on the court and on the road, but we are such good friends off the floor. I also love the feeling after a victory or an all-out practice and will miss that as well.

7. What has been one of your favorite memories with the team?
I would have to say getting to practice at the Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium and the University of Florida's brand new basketball facility.  I will never forget those trips because they really brought the team together as a unit.

8. Do any particular games stick out in your mind?
There have been alot of good wins for us, but last season we defeated Christopher Newport University on the road. It was such a huge win for us because it really kick-started our season and got us going in the right direction.  We play a really tough schedule every year with long travel, and it was good to go so far for a South Region road win.

9. Which will you watch, NBA or college hoops?
College everytime. I am a big Duke fan, and the ACC definately plays the best basketball. I really enjoy watching good teams play no matter where they are from.

10. Which is a better feeling, hitting a three-pointer or forcing a turnover?
Hitting a three-pointer. My job entails forcing turnovers more often, but there is nothing better than burying a three-pointer.

11. What advice would you have for an incoming student-athlete to the PC basketball team?
The biggest thing is to not take anything for granted. It goes by so quickly, but the moments will stick with you. I would also say make sure you have long-term goals in mind, and don't let anything stand in the way of them.

12. Finally, what has been your biggest motivation playing basketball at PC?
Without a doubt my family and friends who have never stopped supporting me. I play every day with them in my heart, and they have always been there for me and I could never thank them enough.
