1. The Athletic Training Department has hired a new assistant trainer, would you tell us about him?
Our new assistant trainer is Matt McKinney. Matt grew up in North Carolina and completed his undergraduate work at High Point University. He then completed his graduate school at Marshall University where he worked with a variety of sports and athletes. Matt brings an excellent knowledge of athletics at the collegiate level and a tremendous work ethic. We are very excited about having Matt on board at Piedmont College.
2. What do incoming student-athletes need to do before they can participate in their sports?
The most important thing is to complete the student-athlete packet that includes an up-to-date physical, provide proof of insurance and information dealing with pre-existing conditions that could potentially effect athletic performance.
3. What are the training room hours available to the student-athletes?
Morning hours are set based upon appointments. The training room will also be open throughout all practices and games as well as a minimum of one hour before and after.
4. How do student-athletes make appointments to see a trainer or to complete rehab?
Student-athletes can make appointments by calling, emailing or stopping by and talking to either myself or Matt.
5. Do you have any advice for an incoming student-athlete?
The biggest thing I would recommend is to make sure they are well-conditioned for their sport so they are not overwhelmed by the exertion during their preseason. This is a proactive approach that will prevent injuries. Also if there is any pre-existing conditions or injuries please let the training staff know so we can take preventative measures which will in turn keep you on the competitive field longer.
6. What is your favorite part of being the Head Athletic Trainer at Piedmont College?
My favorite part about being an athletic trainer is the interaction with the student-athletes due to the wide varieties or personalities. Being closely involved with athletics make my job extremely enjoyable.
